Pig iron also known as hot metal is the product of blast furnace obtained by reduction of iron ore with coke. Pig iron has high impurity like Si , Mn, P etc. Carbon content of pig iron is 4%.
Cast iron is produced by refining or removal of impurities from pig iron. Cast iron has carbon composition more than 2.11%. Cast iron is produced by method known as graphatisation in which silicon is added to convert carbon into graphite.
