Container exports from 18 Asian economies to the US fell about 21 per cent year-on-year to 1,582,195 TEUs in May, the ninth consecutive month of decline, according to JMC statistics this week. Among them, China exported 884,994 TEUs, down 18 per cent, South Korea exported 99,395 TEUs, down 14 per cent, China Taiwan exported 58,553 TEUs, down 20 per cent, and Japan exported 49,174 TEUs, down 21 per cent.
Overall, containerised trade from Asia to the US for exports from January to May this year was 7,091,823 TEUs, down 25 per cent from the same period in 2022.
Recently, CMA CGM issued an official notice announcing that it will significantly increase FAK ocean freight rates on the Asia-North Europe route from 1 August. Duffy said the move is to “continue to provide reliable and efficient services to our customers” and the new rates are effective from 1 August until further notice.
FAK rates for exports from all Asian ports (including Japan, Southeast Asia and Bangladesh) to Nordic ports (including the UK and the full route from Portugal to Finland/Estonia) will increase to US$1,075 per 20ft dry container and US$1,950 per 40ft dry/reefer container from 1 August.
