The origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival can be traced back to the pre-Qin period, popularized in the Han Dynasty, finalized in the Tang Dynasty, officially established in the Northern Song Dynasty, and popular after the Song Dynasty. The original “Moon Worship Festival” was held on the “Autumnal Equinox” of the 24th solar term in the Ganzhi calendar, and was later adjusted to the 15th day of the eighth month of the Xia calendar (lunar calendar).
The main customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival include worshiping the moon, appreciating the moon, eating moon cakes, playing with lanterns, appreciating osmanthus and drinking osmanthus wine. In ancient times, emperors had a system of worshiping the sun in spring and the moon in autumn, and ordinary people also had the custom of worshiping the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Now, the activities of worshiping the moon have been replaced by large-scale and colorful mass moon-viewing and recreational activities.
During this holiday, we can choose to reunite with our family, enjoy the moon, eat moon cakes, and enjoy warm family time. We can also go out with friends to enjoy the beautiful autumn scenery and relax.
